Print on Demand in Cincinnati is a type of publishing which allows writers to print publications on an as-needed basis. Print on demand, also known as POD, eliminates the need for print run of a publication and its associated costs, as well as removing hte need for storage of books. No warehouse is needed. There are many benefits to utilizing print on demand, and here we'll look at reasons why someone would use a print on demand publisher and how the print on demand process works.

Who Uses Print on Demand?

If a writer doesn't need to print mass quantities of a book or other publication, he or she can use the services of a print on demand publisher. For instance, a writer may be new at his craft and cannot find a traditional publisher that is interested in his book. It takes time and energy to shop publishing houses, and it's disheartening to many new writers to learn that 90 percent of all books submitted to traditional publishers are rejected.

Another type of individual who may want to use print on demand is an academic professor. Because academic publications typically have small readerships, there is no reason for them to be printed in large quantities. This saves the university or other institution money.

Companies may also employ print on demand publishers if they need to publish a limited amount of brochures, booklets or other types of material to be distributed company-wide or to clients. It's a relatively quick project turn-around time with good quality publication.

How Print on Demand Works

The print on demand process is unlike traditional publishing in that the material of the book is sent to the publisher digitally. In the traditional publishing process, a letterpress or offset printer was used. With a POD printer, digital priners are used instead. In the past, a publisher would get a tome of paper, perhaps even a series of the work in chapter or segments until the entire book was complete. Also, the manuscript would be in paper form, forcing it to be retyped over and over. Welcome to the 21st century.

With digital publishing, a digital file of the work is sent to the publisher, which they then store on a server. The publisher can send thefinished copy to the printer, which is located in any area closest to them. In traditional publishing, printing may happen on a whole different continent. This way both the writer and publisher save money in printing and in shipping.

When a customer wants to order a copy of a book, the printer simply prints the book, applies the cover and ships it directly to the customer. This save everyone on storage and shipping costs. also, the reader gets to have their book in their hands in a swift amount of time.

If a writer or company wishes to use a print n demand publisher, they will first look at what publishing options are offered by the company. Some publishers will give a writer benefit of an editing and revisions process. People on staff at the print on demand publisher will do any spell checking, editing and revision necessary to make sure the book is flawless.

Some POD companies offer packages where they can have their book cover designed. They may even get to select from a couple of designs to choose the one that best represent their work, The benefit of this is that their book is more professional looking and therefore, has the better chance of selling.

Challenges and Benefits

Individually, books and other publications printed with PODs are more expensive to produce than with traditional publishing. Once of the reasons publishing houses utilize is for that very reason. In the grand scheme of things, the more items you can produce, they cheaper they will be. That is simple economics.

If you're considering getting your book onto the shelves of major booksellers, print on demand may not be the way to go. Book retailers typically avoid carrying books made through print on demand as they don't sell as often as books printed by a traditional publisher. You may be shocked to learn that nearly half of all books printed are returned to the publisher and die either a slow death on the shelves of warehouses or discount book sores, or a quick death when they are destroyed and used for pulp.An image of a stack of bound books.

When book retailers buy from publishers, they purchase at discount, knowing that they will return half of the books they buy. With print on demand, because of the high cost to print each book, they cannot be as steeply discounted as those that are traditionally published. If however, you know your audience, it's fairly limited, and it doesn't worry you to not have your work appear on shelves, then print on demand is for you.

So, what are the benefits? For one thing, it's easy. You don't have to find a publishing house or literary agent to sell your work. You simply upload it, sign a contract and pay a fee to publish it and, in a few days, a book is delivered to you. With your name on it. Also, you don't have to worry about shipping the book to buyers, as the printer takes care of it.

Another upside to print on demand is that you have more royalties collacted, should your book become a hit and sell like hotcakes. In traditional publishing, a greateer percent of monies earned would be kept by the publisher, in one way to recoup the cost of printing.

If you plant to have hundreds of books eventually sold, chances are you don't have room in your basement to store them. Companies are usually short on space too, so if they plan to print pamphlets, an empty closet or cubicle in which to store them might be hard to come by. With digital publishing, storage space is unnecessary, as only one book is printed at a time and not until it's been ordered. Many smaller presses in fact, are converting their printers to digital operations.

Is It a Real Book?

Some print on demand companies are known as vanity presses. That is because they appeal to the vanity of mediocre writers who otherwise would never find their book published by a traditional publisher. Print on demand publishers should have a screening process and some standards of submission. They should also offer editing and revising services for their clients. A poorly written book n ot only reflects badly on the writer, but also on the publisher who takes it on.

Beware of book publishers who retain the complete and total rights to your book. Should you ever become displeased with them or need a new publisher, you may find your work no longer belongs to you. The print on demand publisher should only be allowed limited rights to you work, for thepurpose of publishing.

Just like a Social Security Number, each book printed from anywhere in the world has an ISBN number. The International Standard Book Number a numerical code unique to each book. This allows it to be located and printed and tied to a copyright. Before your work is published through a print on demand company, if you wish, you may obtain a ISBN for the work. Some PODs will obtain it for you, depending on the package.
